Houseman

The strong, steady support every large home relies on — heavy cleaning, moving, maintenance help, and a hundred daily tasks.

Compensation

$60,000–$95,000 base

Typical base compensation, major U.S. markets, 2026. Scope, travel, and household complexity move the range.

We advise on offer structure — schedule, housing, benefits, bonus — before every search. The right package is how great people stay.

A houseman does the work a large home quietly generates every day: the floors machine-polished, the terrace furniture moved for the season, the cases carried up from the car, the chandelier bulbs changed from the tall ladder no one else will climb. Housekeepers keep the surfaces; the houseman keeps everything heavier, higher, and harder to reach.

In a well-staffed residence the houseman is the connective tissue — supporting housekeeping with deep cleaning, supporting the chef with deliveries and kitchen resets, supporting events with tables, tents, and teardown. The role rewards physical capability, a service mindset, and the kind of reliability that shows up in small things done without being asked.

For principals, the hire matters more than its title suggests. A strong houseman extends the life of your finishes and furniture, spares your housekeepers for finer work, and gives the household a person who can simply handle things.

What the role owns

  • Perform heavy and deep cleaning — floors, windows, high surfaces
  • Move furniture, luggage, deliveries, and seasonal items
  • Assist with event setup, breakdown, and resets
  • Handle light maintenance — bulbs, filters, touch-ups, small repairs
  • Maintain garages, storage areas, terraces, and service spaces
  • Support housekeeping and kitchen staff with daily tasks
  • Run errands and accept deliveries
  • Care for outdoor furniture, grills, and equipment

What great looks like

A great houseman keeps a rotation — windows this week, silver closet next — so deep work happens on schedule, not on complaint.

They handle fine floors and furniture with real knowledge: the right pad, the right product, the right pressure.

They see work before it is assigned; the delivery boxes are broken down and gone before anyone mentions them.

They move through an occupied house almost invisibly, timing loud work for empty rooms.

They take pride in the spaces guests never see — a garage and storage room you could photograph.

Interview questions worth asking

  1. 01

What deep-cleaning rotation did you keep at your last house, and how did you schedule loud or disruptive work?

  2. 02

How do you care for stone, hardwood, and antique furniture differently? Walk me through your products.

  3. 03

Tell me about a day when housekeeping, the kitchen, and an event all needed you at once. How did you sequence it?

  4. 04

What small repairs are you comfortable doing yourself, and when do you flag something for a professional?

  5. 05

What does working invisibly in an occupied home mean to you in practice?

Questions

Hiring a houseman, answered.

How is a houseman different from a housekeeper?
Weight and reach, mostly. Housekeepers own the daily care of rooms — surfaces, beds, bathrooms, laundry. The houseman owns what is heavy, high, or mechanical: floor machines, window washing, furniture moving, storage, light maintenance. In large homes the two work as a team, and a good houseman makes the housekeeping staff measurably better by absorbing the punishing work.
Is a houseman the same as a caretaker or handyman?
No. A caretaker stewards a property that sits empty; a houseman works inside a staffed, occupied residence. And unlike a contract handyman, the houseman is household staff — trained to your standards, present daily, and as accountable for how they move through the home as for what they fix. The maintenance skills overlap; the service discipline is the difference.
When does a household need a dedicated houseman?
Watch your housekeepers. When deep cleaning keeps slipping because daily work fills every hour, when the same delivery boxes sit for days, when you are paying vendors for tasks a capable person on staff could absorb — the house is asking for a houseman. Homes above a certain scale, or with frequent entertaining, almost always benefit from one.
Can the role combine with driving or grounds work?
Often, and sensibly. Houseman-driver and houseman-grounds hybrids are common, particularly in homes not quite large enough for both roles separately. The usual caution applies: name the split honestly in the search, and confirm the licenses and skills each half genuinely requires. A hybrid role built on a clear, stated division tends to hold; one built on and other duties does not.
